Rusty Gaffney MD, the "Prince of Pinot" Reviews our Pinot

Volume 6, Issue 13

2004 D’Argenzio Bacigalupi Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 460 cases, $36.
This winery was started in 1997 by twin brothers,
Ricci and Ray D’ Argenzio. Building on their family heritage of wine-making,
they have crafted small lots of Pinot Noir from the Russian
River Valley since their first release in 2000. The website is
www.dargenziowine.com. This Pinot has a bright nose of red fruits.
Richly oaked red fruits carry through to a lingering finish with
moderate fine tannins. A full-flavored style with generous oak features.

2004 D’Argenzio Klopp Thorn Ridge Vineyard Russian River
Valley Pinot Noir 286 cases, $48.
Hi-tone Bing cherries star in the nose with a hint of violets.
The flavors are a cherries jubilee with enticing cola and spice
notes. There are some darker stone fruits peeking out here as well.
The finish is dry and satisfying. I picked this out as a Russian
River Valley Pinot Noir before the unveiling.
A Gold Medal winner at the 2006 Sonoma County Harvest Fair.

Jamie Bronk - Wine Review

Tasting Note and score by Wine Merchant’s Jamie Bronk. The ranking is based on customer’s favorite as measured by their purchases.

D'Argenzio Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2004 - 89 Points Rank 9th (Tied) $38.99

Somewhat Burgundian with soft red fruit, spice and some mineral terroir. The sweet finish will indeed satisfy most looking for less bold Pinot but not overly earthy. (Made in very small batches through a process that uses layers of dry ice and just picked fruit to force the fruit to stay cool while it soaks on the skins to bring out all the flavors. As the dry ice melts, the carbon dioxide keep fermentation from starting which adds to the cold soak time.)

San Diego Union Tribune - Weekly Review

Zin-ful Pleasures

I love Zinfandel. It is truly one of my favorite wines to drink. Why? It is easy to pronounce (Zin FAN dell), incredibly versatile and many Zinfandels are reasonably priced. Oh, and it tastes really good too.

Zinfandel can be produced into many different wines, including sparkling wines; light, fruity blush wines; big, juicy hearty red wines; luscious late harvest wines and rich, sweet Ports. My favorite style of this versatile wine is big, juicy, hearty Zinfandel. Red, of course. Flavors that you will find in this style of wine will include berry, jam, pepper, raisin, soy sauce and vanilla.

Zinfandel pairs well with many foods, including grilled salmon, seared Ahi tuna, pizza, hamburgers, spicy pasta dishes and grilled vegetables. I like to enjoy a glass or two of Zinfandel with a good spicy novel. As always, try your own food pairings, you may be surprised at the results.

My panel and I tasted 22 Zinfandels from all over California. Of the 22, the following 10 were our favorites:

**** Panel Favorite!
2004 Baldacci Ranch, Russian River Valley, $40
D'Argenzio Winery
This wine got a collective "Yum!" from my panel. It is truly delicious and layered with complex aromas and flavors of raspberry and blackberry, cloves, pepper and sweet vanilla.
