Sonoma’s Best Pinot Noir
Highlights From Pinot on The River 2005
Weekend festival of Pinot Noir held in the sleepy town of Guerneville on the Russian River, was a joy to attend. Fabulous weather, a low key atmosphere, and a manageable number of wineries pouring made for an altogether perfect tasting experience. This year, the weather was just as good, and the atmosphere remained low key, but the number of wineries pouring their stuff nearly doubled as did the number ofattendees, making for a bit more of a crush in the tasting tent. My sense is that the event suffered from its own success the previous year, and was perhaps overly ambitious, especially for the small space in which it was held. Since I’m way behind on writing up this event, I’ve transcribed my scores only for wines that scored higher than 8.5/9 on my scale. All wines are Pinot Noir unless otherwise noted. Because most of the prices were so high, I’ve also called out the wines which I believe represent the best values at the tasting.
Enjoy. Score: 9. Sold Out – Brian MacDougal

Mouthwatering Merlot ***½ Panel Favorite!
2003 D’Argenzio Winery, Russian River Valley
“Dense and dark in color, aromas and mouthfeel with scents of semi-sweet chocolate, black cherry, rose petal potpourri and a waft of smoke. This Bordeaux style Merlot is deliciously rich and fruity in the mouth, and the chocolate-cherry-smoke theme carries through to the finish. The .375ml bottle size is perfect for a picnic or when you just want to enjoy a glass or two of an excellent Merlot. Merlot wines tend to be soft and fruity, with a velvety texture and flavors of cherry, berry and green herbs. Try pairing these soft, friendly wines with roasted meats and vegetables, tomato based pasta dishes, grilled salmon and mild cheeses.”
